Silverlight takes on Flash

Published: 24 June 2007

Silverlight is Microsoft’s .NET WPF-based alternative to Flash, which allows you to work in Visual Studio and Expression Studio to create multimedia web pages. It can be integrated with and can make use of existing technologies such as Apache and PHP, as well as JavaScript and XHTML on the client.

Currently Beta 1.0 is available for download, and this includes a go-live licence, allowing its deployment in production applications. The final availability of Silverlight 1.0 is scheduled for summer 2007. Silverlight Streaming, a companion service for Silverlight was also recently announced.
